SWW Stuff: Waste Digester

I have been using Pure Power Blue Bio-Pouches since the end of our first season of camping. After starting with a different product, we were having troubles with black tank solids a the end of our first season and wanted to try something different. With good reviews on Amazon.com, I choose Pure Power Blue and haven’t looked back.

Pure Power Blue is effective at reducing black tank solids. Except for the most recent deposits, most of the solids are broken down and are difficult to detect while monitoring through the clear sewer fitting of our Valterra Dominator Sewer Hose. At first I didn’t believe the solids would be broken down that well. I had to dump the tank multiple times to convince myself it actually drained and a solid wasn’t blocking the outlet keeping the rest of the solids from coming out.

We have used Pure Power Blue in cold and hot environments to effectively keep odor down. Even when the trailer has to sit in storage for longer periods during the summer (a rare occurrence), Pure Power Blue keeps the odor build up to a minimum. To help keep the deodorizer effective, I add a new packet to the tank every two weeks or so while in active storage with wet tanks.

At the end of each camping trip I drain the black tank, add a couple gallons of water, then drop a pouch in. This helps keep the black tank odor free while the trailer is in storage. When preparing to head out again, I recharge the tank with a fresh pouch. This ensures that the waste digestor and odor eliminator are working well during the camping trip.

The pouches make for convenient application into the toilet. Just open the toilet and drop it in. However, make sure your hands are dry. The packet dissolves very quickly and the it will turn your fingers blue.

Every once in a while, the grey tank picks up an odor. When this happens, I place a packet in a sink drain and run plenty of water to dissolve and wash the odor eliminator into the grey tank. Make sure to get all of the blue material washed down the sink before it dries to keep if from staining the sink. Pure Power Blue easily takes care of the odor.

While I didn’t think much of it when selecting the product, Pure Power Blue is based on a biological enzyme and bacteria. This ended up being a benefit when it comes to using dump stations. Many campgrounds, including our storage lot, prohibit dumping if you have formaldehyde or other harsh chemicals in your tanks because it will kill off their septic tank causing issues at the dump station. Pure Power Blue is accepted at all campgrounds and dump stations.

Pure Power Blue stores easily in the camper. I leave the bag in the trailer all year round. The summer heat during storage doesn’t bother it and neither does the deep cold of winter. The resealable bag keeps moisture out during storage in the dry Colorado climate. If you are in a more humid region, you may need an additional air tight storage container and possibly a desiccant to keep he packets from dissolving slightly and sticking together.

At twelve pouches per package, a single package lasts about 6 camping trips or 12 weeks during our summer adventures. I watch for the bag to run low, and easily order a replacement bag before the next trip.
