SWW Stuff: Trailer Tires

After the OEM tires wore out after 8,000 miles, I installed Goodyear Endurance ST225/75R15 Load E rated tires on the travel trailer. After the OEM tires wore very quickly, especially the right rear tire, I wanted a tire with a higher load rating (2830 lbs max load per tire) to try and get more mileage out of the tire. There were several tires that met the higher load rating, and what convinced me to go with the Goodyear Endurance tire was the higher speed rating.

The Goodyear Endurance tires have a speed rating of N (87 mph), versus most of the other tires that were on the market at the time had a speed rating of L (75 mph) or lower. While I normally keep my speed around 65 mph while towing for safety reasons; having a higher speed rating indicates the tires are better at handling increase heat generated while traveling. It also gave me peace of mind if I did use the power of the tow vehicle to increase speed for passing or any other reasons (accidently speeding up to a good beat on the radio).

When I switched to the Goodyear Endurance tires, I replaced all 4 tires, plus the spare tire This was to make sure all the tires were at the same load rating in case the spare tire needed to be used.

Note: Prior to selecting tires with a higher load rating, which comes with a higher tire pressure, it was important to verify the wheel rims can support this increased load. On the inside of the rim, there is a max PSI rating the wheel can support. If you exceed this rating, the wheel itself could fail during operation.

I have been very pleased with these tires and their performance, and I am now on my third set of Goodyear Endurance tires on our travel trailer.
