SWW Stuff: Generator

2016 Ryobi RYi2200A Generator

We chose the Ryobi RYi2200, 2200 W generator (Current model is now the 2300 W) to support boondocking in our trailer. This decision was heavily influenced by @sowewentuncle who had been looking at generators for his truck camper. From his research he concluded the Ryobi was just about as good as the Honda at three-quarters the cost.

Since we travel together most of the time, we decided to each buy one generator with @sowewentdad purchasing the parallel kit. While both of us can generally get by with one generator, having the second generator allows us to run our microwaves and air conditioners if wanted. @sowewentuncle’s truck camper load is light enough that we just hook up the trailer to the generators and then run a 20 A power cord over to @sowewentuncle’s truck camper. It has worked out very well.

When we are not camping, @sowewentdad uses his single Ryobi generator for various activities at the storage lot. Before pulling the trailer out after winter storage, he uses the generator to run a small air compressor to set the tire pressures. Before installing the battery disconnect switch, @sowewentdad would keep the batteries charged during longer periods between trips. Then in case of emergency winterizations in the spring or fall, the same small air compressor easily blows out the freshwater system to keep it from freezing (See below).

Using Generator to Run Air Compressor for Winterizing

When not being used for camping the generator is available for various other activities throughout the year: water bottle launches, paper rocket launches, portable lighting, astronomy, amateur radio activities, etc. Because we have it, we look for ways to use it.
